Subaru and the ASPCA

Subaru is committed to partnering with exciting and worthwhile organizations, reflecting Subaru and their owners' active lifestyles, love of the outdoors, and community involvement.

Did you or anyone you know purchase or lease a Subaru during the Subaru "Share the Love" holiday sales event (November 21, 2009 - January 4, 2010)? For every new vehicle sold or leased during the promotion, Subaru donated $250 to the consumer's choice of five charity partners, one of which is the ASPCA. Last year, the ASPCA received close to $1.2 million from this extraordinary campaign and was the #1 consumer choice. Help us be #1 again this year!

Outback is Motor Trend's 2010 Sport Utility of the Year®

"Thoughtfully engineered, cleverly  detailed and competitively priced, Outback is a terrific all-rounder with broad appeal." -Motor Trend

Sharing many structural and mechanical elements with the also-new-for-2010 Legacy sedan, Subaru's contemporary AWD crossover gets an extra measure of everything that really matters to the active-lifestyle buyers it's seeking: bolder character, enhanced functionality, and improved performance.

We are pleased to announce that the 2010 Outback is Motor Trend's 2010 Sport Utility of the Year®.

Having spent time with the car, Motor Trend Editor-in-chief Angus MacKenzie said, "It boasts car-like refinement, drivability and gas mileage on the road, yet is as capable in the rough stuff as all but the most off-road focused sport utilities. Thoughtfully engineered, cleverly detailed and competitively priced, the Subaru Outback is a terrific all-rounder with broad appeal."

Even more flattering is the fact that this is the second year in a row Subaru took home the award, making us the first car company to ever do so. In the words of Thomas J. Doll, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Subaru of America Inc. "To win the 2009 award for the Forester was wonderful enough, but to have won for the 2010 Outback this year is truly an outstanding achievement."

It seems the good people at Motor Trend saw in the new Outback what so many had seen before. Unmatched versatility. Enviable gas
mileage. The capability of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. A legendary safety record. In short, they saw the Outback for what it is, the Outback.

2010 Subaru Legacy Gets an Impressive Remake

The 2010 Subaru Legacy sedan looks better than its predecessor and it's bigger.

By James R. Healey

NORTHBOUND, NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE, EXIT 2 - What's that say? 3:23? Oh, mercy, we're late for a date with Manhattan.

Wait. That's not the clock. That's the fuel-economy gauge: 32.3 miles per gallon. Impressive.

A number of makers advertise 32 or so on the highway -General Motors is big on that - but it's hard to imagine actually getting that number running so hard up the turnpike, no quarter asked or given. The slow lane's hitting 80 mph, and almost nobody's in the slow lane. Getting 32 in that setting is exceptional.

In fact, almost everything about the thoroughly remade 2010 Subaru Legacy sedan is impressive. It's as if Subaru went through a list of consumer gripes over the years and tried to address them all - much as Subie did in the remake of the 2010 Outback utility wagon (Test Drive, Oct. 30)

Outback and Legacy are mechanically similar, though the Legacy is a little wider and has a slightly longer wheelbase than the wagon. Powertrains are identical, interiors alike, and both were launched last summer. They appeal to very different buyers, though.

To appreciate a Subaru, to understand it's not just another car on a shopping list with Accord, Camry and Fusion, you have to delight in Subaru's commitment to all-wheel drive (standard on all models and tailored to each engine-transmission combo).

You also should be aware of the respect from third-party evaluators. All Subies, for instance, get the "top safety pick" designation, the highest rating, from crash-meisters at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. And Consumer Reports magazine said in November: "With its redesign, the Legacy goes from a decent but small family sedan to one in the top of its class."

For 2010, Legacy, much like the Outback, is:

?Better-looking. More mainstream, less quirky. Some might argue that it lacks its previous personality. But the new persona is an improvement. More tailored, modest fender bulges for accent. A design that, spied across a parking lot, provokes, "Good-looking car; nice job."

?Cheaper, in the good sense. Lower-level versions are $800 less than the similar 2009 models. The six-cylinder versions are $1,600 to $3,900 less. The ultraclean PZEV (partial zero emissions vehicles) versions of the four-cylinder models are, however, priced at $300 more than last year's.

?More powerful, mostly. Base engine has the same 170 horsepower, 170 pounds-feet of torque. But the '10 turbo is 265 hp and 258 lbs.-ft., up from 243/241 in '09. And the six-cylinder is 256/247, up from 245/215.

Most models get better fuel-economy ratings, and the six now runs fine on regular. Last year, Subie specified premium.

?Bigger, inside where it counts. Outside, as with the Outback, the new one is just an inch longer and a couple of inches wider than the old one. Legacy's wheelbase is 3 inches longer this year, nearly all of it dedicated to rear-seat legroom. That, in turn, makes Legacy, finally, a car for adults in back as well as in front. Some larger cars tested lately have had less people room.

Some things that you might not like, similar to gaffes on the Outback, because the two are alike in many ways:

The outside mirrors don't fold. Run up too close to that employee ID card reader and, whack, hundreds of dollars of broken mirror instead of a blemished housing.

There's a wasted gauge on the dashboard that is intended to measure instant miles per gallon but is not marked with numbers and is too hyper in movement. The same function is available in the much-easier-to-see trip computer. The wasted dashboard mpg gauge space should be used for engine temperature, oil pressure or battery voltage. What were they smoking?

The CVT on the four-cylinder is annoying. Continuously variable transmissions, becoming regrettably common, are supposed to use less fuel. But the way they over-rev the engine until the car hits a certain speed is just too bothersome to be worth it.

The six-cylinder still uses a conventional five-speed auto, reason enough to pick the six.

Brisk cornering showed off a bit too much body lean. And if you hit a bump midcorner, the back of the test car liked to step out sideways slightly. If you've driven cars with solid rear axles, you know the feeling. Legacy has independent rear suspension, not a solid axle, so has no excuse.

The non-folding mirrors and the stupid, useless mpg gauge are burrs under the saddle. Midcorner bump-steer can be tamed by lower speed (yuck) or accepted as an invigorating challenge.

None of these is a fatal flaw, especially stacked against the fine overall behavior. In fact, the new Legacy is a handsome, comfortable, peppy, highly friendly and very desirable midsize sedan.

The only drawback: Subie's selling everything it builds, so discounts are small.

2010 SUBARU LEGACY

What? Midsize sedan; all grown up from the previous, too-small compact model; four-door, four-wheel drive. Available with four- or six-cylinder engine. Three flavors: 2.5i four-cylinder; 2.5GT turbocharged four-cylinder; 3.6R six-cylinder.

PZEV (partial zero emissions) models, however, start at $21,990, $300 more than the '09.

How powerful? 2.5-liter four-cylinder is rated 170 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, 170 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000. 2.5-liter turbocharged is rated 265 hp at 5,600, 258 lbs.-ft. at 2,000. 3.6-liter six-cylinder rated 256 hp at 6,000, 247 lb.-ft. at 4,400.

2.5i CVT test car trip computer showed 18.9 mpg (5.29 gallons per 100 miles) in suburban driving, 32.3 mpg (3.1 gal./100 mi.) in high-speed highway driving.

Overall: Close to a bull's-eye.
